A passion project can become so much more. Authentic storytelling, loyal listeners, and thoughtful monetization can turn a podcast into a thriving business and career.
What started as a passion project has transformed into a community, business, and eventually, a full-time career. More than six years ago, mind coach Susi Cabello launched Decretum Podcast to share the tools and ideas that made a meaningful difference in her own life. Today, Decretum reaches listeners across Mexico and Latin America who turn to her guidance to build healthier daily routines through manifestation and conscious living practices.
Decretum has become part of many listeners’ daily wellness routines. They share episodes with friends and family, which has helped the show grow largely through word of mouth and a community that connects with its message.
Growing through Authenticity
While short-form clips on social media help Cabello reach new listeners, she believes Decretum’s connection with its audience comes from the intimacy of podcasting.
“It’s often just you, a microphone, and your real voice,” Cabello said. “There’s less performance and more authenticity, and I think people connect deeply with creators who are willing to genuinely share what moves them.”
Rather than chasing trends or changing her content to appeal to everyone, Cabello has focused on building relationships with listeners who genuinely connect with her message. That trust has helped turn individual listeners into a community that talks about her show with others and keeps coming back for more.
From podcast to business
Cabello began to see Decretum as more than a creative outlet a few years into her podcasting journey. At the time, she was working a 9 to 5 job she didn’t enjoy, while the podcast had already reached around 100,000 plays. For the first time, she began to see the podcast as something more than a creative outlet. It was something she could potentially build a career around.
“I realized I needed to take it seriously and create a Plan B.”
About three years after launching the podcast, she began exploring monetization. Over time, the revenue she generated through Decretum gave her the opportunity to leave her job and build a career around something she genuinely loved.
Looking back, Cabello wishes she had recognized the business potential of podcasting sooner.
“What starts as a creative project can evolve into a real company, community, and career when you build it intentionally.”
Monetizing without losing what matters
Turning her podcast into a business didn’t mean compromising what was successful. What was important was to maintain control over what she endorsed and protecting the trust she had built with her audience. Through Simplecast, she found a monetization solution that offered flexibility and transparency while allowing her to choose partnerships that aligned with her audience and values.
She has also seen a direct connection between consistency and monetization. Publishing more often creates more opportunities to generate revenue while giving her audience more of the content they value. Cabello remains focused on creating content that genuinely serves her listeners even as she balances frequency with authenticity.
“If you stop creating content that genuinely serves your audience, people will feel it, and they’ll stop listening. I’ve found that when I stay true to the reason I started the podcast in the first place, the business naturally follows.”
What’s next for Decretum?
Cabello is looking forward to returning to a weekly publishing cadence and creating more episodes that support listeners on their personal and spiritual growth journeys.
Six years after launching Decretum, her focus stays the same: creating meaningful content that helps people build the lives they want to create. And her journey is a reminder that a podcast built on genuine connection and passion can grow into something much bigger.
