Podcast growth today goes beyond downloads—data, flexibility, and evolving strategies help creators find new audiences and unlock long-term value.

What’s important for your show? Downloads, growth, monetization? Kristopher Hannum, Staff Product Manager at Simplecast has the insight to help creators figure out what their show needs and how to take advantage of the tools on Simplecast. From new growth opportunities to shifting with the changes of the industry, Kristopher has advice for podcasters looking to master their game.

Use analytics to go beyond downloads

“We've built a really flexible analytics suite that lets creators go well beyond just the classic downloads metric—things like listener behavior, campaign performance, and how different segments of your audience are engaging. I think for a lot of creators, that depth can feel overwhelming. So what ends up happening is they default back to just the top-line numbers. But there's actually a lot more insight sitting right there that can help shape content and monetization decisions.”

Consistency and flexibility drive growth

“The shows that grow aren't necessarily chasing every trend, but they're also not super rigid. They keep publishing even when growth may not be obvious, and they're willing to experiment— whether that's different formats, or distribution, or how they show up outside the RSS feed. Podcasting today is a lot bigger than just publishing episodes. The creators who understand that are the ones finding their audience in more places.”

Be open to change

“Being open to change sounds simple, but it's probably the most consistent pattern that I see. The industry is shifting—tools are evolving, listener behavior is changing, and new formats are popping up. The creators who are willing to adjust tend to outperform the ones who just stick closely to what used to work. Even small experiments, like trying a different format, adjusting your release cadence, or expanding your distribution are all avenues for potentially unlocking new growth.”

Think beyond the RSS feed

“Distribution is about meeting the audience where they already are. That might mean leaning more into video on YouTube or Apple. It could be newsletters, LinkedIn, bonus content, or subscription feeds. The podcast is the foundation, but not the full picture. The RSS feed is still important, but it’s just one piece of a broader content ecosystem. The creators who are growing are the ones extending their content into other channels in a way that feels natural for both them and their audience.”

Unlock more value from your existing content

“A lot of creators, especially ones that have been around for a long time, are sitting on a backlog of really valuable content. There’s a real opportunity to repurpose that, whether it’s pulling clips for social, revisiting older episodes that are still relevant, or resharing them in different formats. And soon, Simplecast will make it easier to reuse and share episodes across your shows, helping you extend the life of your content without starting from scratch. An episode doesn’t have to be a one-time event, it can evolve and reach new audiences
 over time.”

Downloads don’t tell the full story

“The biggest mistake I see is the ‘line must go up’ mentality. Growth isn’t always linear and even really successful shows plateau at times. Downloads also don't tell the full story. You can have high download numbers without real engagement. There's a lot more value in looking at the patterns like listener retention, episode performance, and audience behavior, rather than just focusing on that one download number.”

Treat your podcast like it’s always growing

“Consistency paired with paying attention is more important now than it ever has been before. Keep publishing, but take the time to understand what your data is telling you and how the industry is changing. Creators who find success are usually the ones who treat their podcast as something that evolves over time, not just something static.”

The time to evolve your strategy is here and now—and it never ends. Creators get ahead of planning and growth on Simplecast. Get started today.
